President's Comments
This is going to be a very busy month. I’m finally getting around to finishing all of those jobs left over from the winter season and tackling the spring related garden tasks.

Yes, this is a busy month for all of us, with many significant events on our schedules and summer right around the corner. But I want to share with you an event happening this month that is very significant to our entire community. Please take time out from your busy schedules to attend this very important set of meetings.

For some time now, our friends and neighbors of the Trinidad Rancheria have been working to improve access to their property off Scenic Drive. The time has come to move to the next phase of this project and that will happen this month, with a Community Design Fair scheduled for May 18-21. Below are excerpts from the official media release, which I believe are important enough to quote directly:

“The Trinidad Rancheria and the City of Trinidad welcomes Tribal members, community members, and stakeholders to come share their vision for the future of the Trinidad Rancheria and surrounding communities by participating in a Community Design Fair May 18-21, 2009. The four-day Design Fair will focus on creating a community vision for a livable and walkable community center, the incorporation of cultural values and highlight the proposal for a new Highway 101 Interchange to the Trinidad Rancheria.

Currently, the only access to the Trinidad Rancheria is from Scenic Drive, which was constructed on the face of a steep bluff adjacent to the Pacific Ocean. Scenic Drive has experienced extensive damage associated with slope instability and bluff erosion at several locations and is constantly subject to road closures. Critical services such as: Fire, Ambulance, and law enforcement are unable to access the Rancheria and its neighbors in the event of road closure. Safety, accessibility, and vitality of the Trinidad Rancheria and its neighbors are contingent upon a permanent alternative to Scenic Drive. The Design Fair will kick off on Monday, May 18 with an opening presentation and free tri-tip dinner at the CherAe Heights Casino at 5:30 pm. Vegetarian options will be available. There will be music by the Merv George Band, a presentation on “Envisioning the Future of the Trinidad Rancheria”, interactive visioning exercises, and a chance to sit down at “design tables” and illustrate your own vision. Families are welcome and door prizes will be handed out for all ages.

On Tuesday, May 19, community members are invited to meet at the Tribal Offices, across from the CherAe Heights Casino, at 3:00 pm for a “walk audit” and bus tour of the area. Give your input on how access can be improved for people and cars, and your vision for pedestrian safety, housing and economic development.

The Design Fair will wrap up on Thursday, May 21 with a presentation of the proposed plan, a potluck dinner, door prizes for all ages, and display of traditional Tribal regalia at 6:00 pm at Trinidad City Hall, 409 Trinity Street.

This event is hosted by the Trinidad Rancheria Land Use/Transportation Department in partnership with the City of Trinidad, Caltrans, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and funded by the Humboldt County Association of Governments.”

Needless to say, this is our opportunity to actively participate in creating part of our community’s future. The Rancheria is requesting community input and everyone should do their part to help create a shared vision of that future.

If you can attend only one of the Design Fair sessions, plan to attend on Monday May 18, as this session will set the stage for the remaining design activities and provide an overall view of the design process, as well as allow everyone to participate in the initial visioning exercises. See the enclosed flyer for more information on times and locations for the various events.

As business owners, Chamber members and residents of our local community, I urge everyone to attend and participate in this very important event that will help shape Trinidad’s future.

As always, have a great month.

Now Open! Trinidad (Twinidad?) Twisitor Center
Follow us @TrinidadTweets and receive up-to-the-minute Chamber News, remindMe Event Notification, and Chamber Member Promotions.

Trinidad has joined the ranks of savvy cities around the world that tweet! What's all this Twitter stuff you say? If you are asking that, tweeting is probably not for you. Well not yet anyway. Meanwhile, we're on the map at Twisitorcenter.com (first on the North Coast!).

twitter bird image
Twisitors (Trinidad visitors who tweet with twitter.com) can now "ask the locals" by tweeting travel questions directly to us.

Giving more personal suggestions on things-to-do, as well as unique personal perspectives of Trinidad is not only helpful, it's fun! If we're unavailable, fielding questions like "Where's Strawberry Rock in Trinidad?" can be done by our "followers" (friends who subscribe to our tweets) and the twitter community at large. Someone in London who likes Trinidad may get the tweet, and be excited to answer it. Twitter-ers are generally enthusiastic, helpful people. If we can get Ned tweeting, imagine having him available to answer your tweets.

I like getting tweets like "Hey everyone, there are 3 whales whooping it up in the Bay." You can follow your favorite local businesses as well as international news. Emergency notifications over Twitter have even helped alert residents in their cities. Curious? Check out our Trinidad Twisitor Center and the Web for more information. Get tweeting!

We’re Looking for a Few Good Men and Women
This summer will be the first full season that our new chamber office will be open for business. We would like to have the office open as many hours as possible to support visitors to our area, especially on weekends and holidays. Since we do not have the staff to keep the office open as much as we would like to, we are looking for volunteers to contribute a few hours each week to help us with this effort.

Executive Director Dori Fulk and Vice President Guia Hiegert are putting together an “office open” schedule and are looking for volunteers. It will be loads of fun; you will meet some interesting people and help represent our beautiful area to visitors and locals alike. We will be able to offer loads of information, supply maps and brochures and most importantly provide that personal touch to make our visitors feel right at home. And Dori and Guia will have everything organized for you, so you can relax and enjoy talking to our visitors. So volunteer today! If you can contribute even a few hours to help staff the office, please contact Dori, Call 677-1610

Notary Services Now Available in Trinidad
Now there’s no need to leave Trinidad if you need the services of a Notary. Robin Frazer, Trinidad’s Assistant City Clerk, wants to remind everyone that she is now a certified California Notary Public. Robin is available at the City Office on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9 AM to 2 PM, or by appointment. And as a special bonus offer to Chamber members, all notary services are 50% off until June 1st. Thanks Robin (services offered are provided by a private citizen and not connected with the City of Trinidad). Call 677-0223 or 599-8537.

George Herd Named Chamber’s 2009 Citizen of the Year! Congratulations to George. “Thank you for your service to our community.”

Thank You for Your 2009 Membership Get your 2009 membership window decal from Dori, if you missed it in your mail. Proudly display it as a symbol of your support for our Chamber and demonstrate to your friends and visitors that you support our community in a very active way.

Get Linked Up! If you haven’t already been linked from our Chamber’s Web site to your own Member site, now is the time to do it. Our Web site has a new look, with lots of exciting features that will attract both local and distant viewers. Linking will help your search rankings too! We have thousands of visitors looking at our site every month.
With advertising costs increasing, getting maximum benefit from Web based advertising and exposure is critical. Or if you sponsor or support a nonbusiness or non-profit organization that would benefit from linking the Chamber Web site and yours, we now have the “in-house” ability to do it quickly and easily. Don’t delay, use this Chamber service now.
